The damage
The 2023 east-Bixby hail line dropped quarter-to-half-dollar-sized stones across Stone Canyon. The roof was 11 years old, originally a builder-grade architectural shingle, and the homeowner had been turned down for a claim once already by a roofer who said the damage was 'cosmetic.'
Our inspection said otherwise. Mat exposure on the north and east slopes, soft-metal denting in the gutters and downspouts, and bruising on every slope. We documented hit density (hits per 10×10 test square) on every face and provided a one-page slope summary with photos.
The claim
The homeowner refiled the claim with the new documentation. The carrier reopened. We met the adjuster on the roof, walked them through the slope summary, and got initial approval for a full replacement.
The first-pass scope under-counted by about $4,800. We respectfully supplemented — full decking spot repair (five soft sheets in the valleys), full ridge cap replacement, gutter screens, and the Class 4 shingle upgrade approved against the Class 4 impact discount on the homeowner's policy.
Net to the homeowner: their $2,500 deductible. Net to the project: an Atlas StormMaster Shake Class 4 system with the manufacturer's impact warranty and a meaningful premium discount applied to their homeowner's policy going forward.
Install and turnover
Two-day install for the larger footprint and steeper cut-up roofline common to Stone Canyon. Full tear-off, decking replacement on the five soft sheets, ice-and-water in every valley and at eaves, balanced ridge ventilation, and StormMaster Shake in the homeowner's selected color.
Lifetime workmanship warranty paperwork delivered at turnover, along with the manufacturer's certificate to send to the insurance carrier for the Class 4 premium discount.

Frequently asked
Will my insurance pay for a Class 4 upgrade?
Sometimes — and often there's a homeowner premium discount that comes with installing Class 4. We walk you through both during the inspection.
What if my claim was already denied?
Get a second opinion. Initial claim denials based on a single ground-level look or a poorly documented inspection are common. With proper documentation, denied claims are routinely reopened and approved.
Does Stone Canyon really get hit harder than other Bixby neighborhoods?
It depends on the storm. The 2023 east-Bixby line clipped Stone Canyon, White Hawk, and Park Ridge particularly hard. Other storms have cycled through different parts of the city. Every storm is local.
