The storm
The April 2024 hail event dropped 1.5- to 1.75-inch stones across south Bixby. White Hawk took it head-on. We had three homes on the same street under contract within 48 hours of the event.
This homeowner had a 12-year-old builder shingle that was already losing granules — the hail was the final straw. We documented bruising across all four slopes, mat exposure on the south field, and granule packing in three downspout splashes.
The claim
Filed with Farmers. We met the adjuster on the roof. First-pass scope missed gutter screens entirely and under-counted the ridge cap. The supplement was approved within a week for an additional $2,940 — decking spot repair, full ridge cap replacement, and gutter screens.
Homeowner elected to upgrade from the carrier-approved standard architectural to Atlas StormMaster Shake Class 4 at their cost difference — about $1,400 net. With the Class 4 certificate they qualified for a 28% wind-and-hail insurance premium discount that will recover the upgrade cost in under five years.
Install day
Five-person crew on site at 7:00 AM. Full tear-off complete by 11:30 AM. Decking inspection caught two soft sheets near the south valley — replaced before underlayment.
Atlas Summit synthetic underlayment dried in by 1:00 PM. Ice-and-water shield in every valley and along eaves. StormMaster Shake in Weathered Wood installed by 4:30 PM. Magnet sweep complete by 5:15 PM — every nail accounted for.

Frequently asked
Is Class 4 worth the upgrade cost?
On Bixby homes with a wind-and-hail-discount-eligible policy, almost always yes. The premium discount typically recovers the cost in 3–5 years, and Class 4 holds up much better to the hail Bixby sees.
How long did the project take?
One day for the install. About 18 days from first call to magnet sweep, mostly waiting on the supplement approval.
What was the out-of-pocket?
The homeowner paid their $1,500 policy deductible plus the $1,400 Class 4 upgrade cost. The carrier covered the balance.
